Set in the heart of Palakkad town, the Girikumar Residence is an interior design project that blends traditional Kerala materials with a restrained, contemporary sensibility - a home that feels rooted and current at once. Textured lime-finish walls in soft greys and greens set a quiet, tactile backdrop throughout, offset by warm teak detailing on ceiling edges, door frames, and furniture. Glass block partitions - lit from within - bring a soft, diffused glow into circulation spaces, doubling as a display backdrop for a striking figurative artwork in the hallway.

The living and dining areas sit on a deliberate contrast of flooring: cool green kota stone underfoot in the lounge, giving way to warm Athangudi-style patterned tiles bordered in traditional motifs beneath the dining table - a nod to Kerala's material heritage without feeling literal or dated. Furniture throughout leans into cane and dark wood, with Jeanneret-inspired chairs, a sculptural round dining table, and low-slung caned sofas that keep the material palette warm and textural. Curated display niches - some backlit, some simply carved into the wall - hold books, ceramics, and traditional artefacts, giving the home a sense of personal history layered into a considered design language. The result is an interior that speaks fluently in both traditional and modern registers, anchored by craft, texture, and a confident, editorial restraint.
