Tucked at the end of a winding path through a rubber plantation on the outskirts of Palakkad, House Among the Groves stands where an ancestral home once did - rebuilt, but never forgetting what came before it. The brief was clear: honour the memory and character of the original house while building something easier to live in and maintain for the next generation. The result is a home that reads as traditional Kerala architecture reimagined - deep sloping roofs finished in Mangalore-pattern tiles salvaged and reused from the ancestral structure, carrying forward a material history quite literally overhead. Wide verandahs wrap the ground floor, sheltered under generous eaves, offering the kind of shaded, breeze-filled sit-out spaces central to traditional Kerala living - a place to read the morning paper, exactly as intended. Deep verandahs are laid in bold black-and-white patterned tiles, a graphic touch against the home's otherwise restrained white-and-timber palette. Cost-effective interlocking cement block construction - left exposed as an interior texture in places - kept the build efficient without compromising on solidity or charm.

Inside, a double-height living room is anchored by a wood-clad sloped ceiling, its exposed rafters echoing the vernacular pitched roof above. A custom staircase with a hand-twisted timber and steel railing curves up to the first floor, doubling as both a functional connector and a sculptural centerpiece. Furniture throughout leans into caned, dark-wood pieces that feel continuous with the home's traditional roots, while a mounted elephant head sculpture and woven pendant lights add warmth and personality to the open living and dining spaces. The kitchen and bedrooms keep to a quieter, more functional palette - sleek dark cabinetry, patterned tile accents, and simple furnishings - letting the architecture's traditional gestures take center stage in the more public spaces. House Among the Groves is, at its heart, a study in continuity: taking what a family's ancestral home once stood for, and rebuilding it - lighter, easier to maintain, but still unmistakably home.
